Mal Coble

General Manager, TUNRA

Mal Coble is the General Manager for The University of Newcastle Research Associate (TUNRA) which has been relaunched from 1 July 2016 as a subsidiary of UON with a strategy to engage with government and industry to provide research and consultancy services that contribute further to the University’s research and innovation objectives.

Mal has extensive experience in senior leadership and consulting roles within both public and private sector organisations.  Specific experience in electricity transmission and distribution networks includes planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, stakeholder consultation, network regulation and pricing.  Mal also has significant smart grid transformation experience applied in the Asia Pacific region and gained from interpreting and leveraging key success factors from global energy and utilities experience.

Mal’s most recent roles have been focussed on formulating strategies and innovative solutions for adapting to the changing energy landscape and providing additional opportunity to grow business value. This has included: forecasting future electricity demand; development of renewable energy hubs; implementation of hybrid energy demonstration projects incorporating battery storage; investigation into electric vehicle charging infrastructure; procurement of a non-network solutions and leading demand management initiatives; research into consumer behaviour; and development of electricity transmission pricing.

Mal holds an honours degree in electrical engineering (Power), an MBA (Strategic Management) and is passionate about contributing to a sustainable future for Australia.
