Graphite grant still open: reminder for SMEs exploring battery recycling and processing

Australian SMEs working on graphite technologies for battery use still have time to apply for matched funding through CSIRO’s graphite R&D grant program

Australian mining and manufacturing SMEs are being reminded that CSIRO’s graphite research and development grant is still open for applications, with funding available until 30 March 2026, or earlier if the $400,000 funding pool is fully allocated.

Open since February 2025, the grant offers matched funding of $10,000 to $50,000 to eligible small and medium businesses aiming to improve how graphite is processed, reused, or applied in battery technologies. The program is part of the Batteries Research and Development Program funded by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and delivered by CSIRO.

The grant supports collaborative projects between SMEs and CSIRO researchers, with a focus on areas such as alternative feedstocks, recycling techniques, ore characterisation, purification, coating, and scaling up processing for battery anodes. Projects that help reduce waste or improve the efficiency and quality of battery-grade graphite are encouraged.

To be eligible, applicants must be incorporated in Australia, hold both an ABN and ACN, be registered for GST, and employ fewer than 200 people. Applicants must also show a commitment to future export opportunities.

Projects must include matched funding from the business, and eligible companies can also apply for the CSIRO Kick-Start Program to unlock an additional $50,000 in matched support.

The application process involves two stages. First, businesses submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) outlining their project’s focus. If shortlisted, applicants are invited to prepare a full R&D proposal with assistance from a CSIRO facilitator.

Dr Adam Best, CSIRO Principal Research Scientist, said the program is designed to help Australian businesses build capabilities in a key material for batteries.

“While Australia currently has limited export markets for the specialised type of graphite used in batteries, we are ideally positioned to become a key supplier to the US and other global markets given our significant natural endowment of this critical mineral,” Dr Best said.

“This grant opportunity will help Australian businesses develop the innovative technologies and processes needed to become global leaders in natural graphite production for battery applications, by partnering with CSIRO scientists and leveraging our expertise in R&D.”

In addition to funding, successful applicants gain access to CSIRO’s characterisation and testing facilities, enabling businesses to better assess the quality and potential of local graphite sources or test performance improvements in new processing methods.

SMEs interested in applying are encouraged to consult the Graphite R&D Grant Opportunity Guidelines and sample agreements before submitting their EOI. A recorded webinar, originally held in February 2025, is also available online to help businesses understand the grant process and collaboration model.
