TRaCE matched funding vouchers give small firms access to advanced labs and equipment
Australian SMEs developing clean energy, green fuels, solar technologies or recycling solutions can apply for TRaCE vouchers that match up to $50,000 in R&D spending and provide access to expert researchers, facilities and tailored project support.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) developing breakthrough clean energy and recycling technologies can now apply for the Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) R&D Voucher Program, which offers matched funding of up to $50,000 to support research and development.
The program is designed to reduce the financial risks of early-stage R&D and give companies direct access to the skills and facilities of the University of Newcastle (UoN) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Businesses selected for a voucher will be able to work alongside university researchers, use advanced laboratories and access specialised equipment that might otherwise be out of reach.
Eligibility and themes
To apply, companies must hold an Australian Business Number (ABN) or Indigenous Corporation Number (ICN) and have had an annual turnover of less than $100 million in each of the last two financial years. The R&D project must take place at UoN or UNSW and fall within one of TRaCE’s four research themes:
-
Solar technology – increasing the scale and integration of solar solutions
-
Clean energy – electrifying energy systems and improving storage
-
Green fuels and chemicals – expanding low-carbon fuel and chemical production
-
Circular economy – recycling, reusing and reforming waste materials
The matched funding must be in cash, not in-kind services.
Support available
Each successful applicant will be assigned a TRaCE facilitator who will help match the business with a suitable research team and get the project underway quickly. The vouchers also come with tailored intellectual property arrangements, so companies can clearly understand how any outcomes will be managed.
By working within the universities, companies can use advanced testing and analysis tools without the need for large up-front capital investment. They can also generate the data needed to demonstrate the potential of their innovation to customers, partners or investors.
Limited places remain
Only a limited number of vouchers are available for 2025. Applications can be made through TRaCE’s website, and eligible SMEs are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
