A not-yet methodology, for a not-yet green hydrogen economy | Hybrid Seminar

This seminar explores how to study the emerging, uncertain green hydrogen future through evolving, place-based research methods.

August hydrogen uon regional

You are invited to a hybrid seminar exploring the methodological complexities of researching green hydrogen futures, presented through the lens of ongoing research at the Port of Newcastle by Marguerite Coetzee, PhD Candidate from University of Bristol, UK.

Across the social sciences, there is growing attention to the socio-spatial dynamics of energy transitions. Yet, studying an emerging, uncertain, and still largely unrealised energy landscape, such as green hydrogen raises significant questions: How do we investigate something that is both omnipresent in discourse and elusive in practice? How do we locate “the field” in a future that hasn’t yet materialised?

This seminar will grapple with these questions, offering a critical reflection on methodological tensions and conceptual challenges in studying the ‘hydrogen scape’. Drawing on theories from political economy, energy humanities, and new materialism, the speaker proposes a methodology-in-the-making, one shaped by infrastructure, governance, capital, and lived encounters in and around Newcastle.

Join us for this thought-provoking session as we navigate the intersection of imagined futures and grounded research practice.

HDR and Master of Social Change & Development (MSCD) students are encouraged to attend. Please register to RSVP and receive the Zoom link closer to the event.
