Austmine Webinar: Unlocking Value in Mining Through Deep Tech Innovation
The webinar will showcase how a clear commercial vision, paired with the disciplined processes of a deep tech innovation house, can unlock breakthrough technologies

ith a clear commercial target of economically processing EV battery black mass at low volumes, Oxleigh Technologies engaged Scimita, a deep tech innovation house, to evaluate all possible processing pathways. Through an accelerated innovation program, the team assessed existing scientific options and explored new approaches, ultimately landing on a novel molten sulphur reactor process.
This breakthrough technology has successfully advanced through its proof-of-science stage, demonstrating strong economic potential, and is now in proof-of-technology with a pilot reactor delivering highly promising results in both recovery and cost competitiveness. Beyond battery recycling, the program has also shown potential applications of molten sulphur in mineral processing — particularly for lithium, nickel, cobalt, gold, and other critical minerals.
The webinar will showcase how a clear commercial vision, paired with the disciplined processes of a deep tech innovation house, can unlock breakthrough technologies. It will also highlight how circular economy thinking can deliver innovation outcomes far beyond the original objectives, opening new markets and value streams.
Oxleigh Technologies’ work has been recognised with two CRC-P grants, underscoring its alignment with Australia’s national innovation priorities. The molten sulphur reactor presents the potential for mobile “smelter” solutions that are commercially competitive with international operators, creating an opportunity for Australia to significantly increase local value-add across the mining, concentration, and smelting value chain.
