Energy Mini Series Event | Net Zero: Decarbonisation opportunity
Business Hunter is pleased to welcome Meg McDonald, Interim Chief Commissioner of the NSW Net Zero Commission, and Bertus De Villiers, Vice President of Continuous Manufacturing at Orica, for a practical and timely discussion on how the Hunter is balancing decarbonisation with industrial growth.

The Hunter has always been a region that adapts. From its industrial beginnings to its emerging role in clean energy, the Hunter continues to shape the future of NSW’s economy. Today, as we face the dual challenge of cutting emissions and growing new industries, the message is clear - the transition must support jobs, competitiveness and long-term prosperity.
About the speakers:
As Interim Chief Commissioner, Meg McDonald leads the body responsible for independently tracking NSW’s legislated emissions targets - 50% by 2030, 70% by 2035, and Net Zero by 2050. The Commission’s first report outlines how key sectors including energy, transport, heavy industry and agriculture are tracking, and what needs to happen next to shift from policy ambition to real progress.
Orica’s Bertus De Villiers brings the business lens, sharing how the company’s Kooragang Island facility is transitioning toward clean hydrogen. The Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub, supported by $432 million in grant funding under ARENA’s Hydrogen Headstart program, represents a key step in decarbonising heavy industry while maintaining local manufacturing and supply chains.
What we’ll explore:
- Where NSW stands in achieving its 2030 and 2035 emissions goals
- The Hunter’s role as an industrial powerhouse in the energy transition
- The scale of investment, collaboration and coordination required to decarbonise without decline
- Orica’s role in leading the hydrogen transition and what it means for the broader supply chain
- Practical insights for local businesses looking to reduce emissions while staying competitive
This event will highlight how large-scale energy users and policy leaders are working together to ensure that transformation in the Hunter supports growth - not contraction. For businesses in manufacturing, energy, supply chain and investment, this breakfast will offer clear insight into what’s happening now and what’s next.
