Future Fuels CRC's latest project (RP2.2-05) from the University of Queensland researched policy mechanisms and initiatives employed in a number of international jurisdictions with more mature biomethane industries (Denmark, Italy, UK, US and Canada). It compared them against the existing policy and regulatory landscape in Australia. It examined barriers and enablers within Australia, and identified potential policy mixes that could be applied to current Australian challenges.

The project completed a comprehensive analysis complemented by stakeholder interviews to:

1) map the current policy and regulatory regime across the biomethane value chain in Australia and identify existing gaps, barriers and opportunities

2) draw lessons from international case studies to identify suitable policy options and assess whether these could be transferred to the Australian context

3) provide recommendations on policy mixes that could support Australia’s biogas industry
