The Billion-Dollar Blindspot: Missed production targets costing Australian mining companies

In this webinar Bernd Elser, Accenture’s Global Lead for Natural Resources, will talk Accenture's latest research revealing significant production predictability issues within the mining industry and exploring the stark reality that, missing forecasted production is not an exception.

In the past four years, top mining companies have missed production targets, meaning they have missed out on $57 billion in revenue and have typically performed 4% worse than forecasted by themselves 12 months earlier. In the same four-year period, 62% of mines reported results at or below the lower half of the guidance range. The issue gets worse when you focus on regional “misses," or the difference between forecasted and actual production. The misses in Australia regionally are -30.8%, more than doubling the misses for North America (-14.8%) more than tripling the misses for South America (-9.0%).

While many mining companies miss their targets, the issue is significantly worse in the Australian market. With annual demand for rare earth minerals projected to grow by 2.5x by 2030, these production misses pose problem in that they are missed profits, but also from a broader view as a threat to an effective net-zero transition.
