A multi-scale framework for erosion assessment and mined land rehabilitation

Effective post-mining rehabilitation requires a precise understanding of erosion - a complex process driven by the interplay of hydraulics, topography, and vegetation.

This webinar, presented by Tim Rohde FAusIMM(CP), examines a nested observational hierarchy – ranging from micro-scale laboratory tests to macro-scale LiDAR surveys – to capture the full scope of landform evolution.

At the micro-scale, we isolate mechanical and chemical drivers through rainfall simulators to quantify fundamental soil erodibility. Shifting to the meso and macro-scales, we utilise high-resolution photogrammetry and LiDAR to bridge the gap between controlled experimentsand the messy reality of in situ landscapes.

Ultimately, integrating these diverse datasources is the only credible way to calibrate long-term models and demonstrate thestructural resilience required for successful land relinquishment.
